Effective January 1, 2018, Alabama Department of Revenue released for issue newly designed military license plates. 
Available at the office at the time of registration are the following:  Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines.  These license plates feature six characters and the branch logo to the left. The license plates display a red, white and blue background, with the exeption of the Marine tag, which retaines its original design, but has also been expanded to hold six characters.

In addition, newly designed Desert Storm/Desert Shield (Persian Gulf Veteran) and Purple Heart license plates are now available at the licensing office.  The Desert Shield plates are red, white and blue and carry the Persian Gulf shield. The Purple Heart tags are purple and white.

Also available in a new design are the Coast Guard, Atomic Nuked Veteran, Korean War Veteran and Merchant Marine license plates.  These plates can be ordered by the licensing clerk from ADOR at the time of registration.
Finally, the Disabled Veteran and Retired Military license plates have both been redone to display the service branch on the left of the tag and state US ARMED FORCES RETIRED OR DISABLED VETERAN at the bottom of the tag. Both tags have been expanded to hold six characters. Both tags are still available for handicap parking accessibility. These license plates will be ordered by the licensing clerk from ADOR at the time of registration.
