Commissioner’s Corner

There were at least 67 lives lost to distracted driving in Alabama in 2022. That is 67 too many.
In 2023, Alabama legislatures, with influence from our local representative Randy Wood, passed the hands-free driving law, which went into effect this June. The greatest to benefit are areas with pedestrian traffic.
It is now illegal for drivers to hold a wireless device to make calls, send texts, browse the web, or make or watch videos
The Alabama Department of Transportation offers the following tips:
 Use Hands-Free Technology, like Bluetooth and dashboard mounts
 Plan Ahead – Set navigation and music playlists before driving
 Silence Notifications
 Pull off the road — choose a safe location, like a well-lit parking lot
 Put Your Phone Away – in the glove compartment, in your purse or in the backseat.
